Biography

I've been active in public life for over two decades: most recently as the Saanich South MLA (2005 – 2009), serving as Critic for Health and Education. While an MLA, I took an active interest in many local issues, like farm tax assessment, the ALC’s mishandling of Panama Flats, and The Land Conservancy’s campaign to save Madrona Farm.

I've been outspoken on provincial issues such as wait lists for hip and knee surgery, hospital over-crowding, earthquake proofing of schools, Type 2 diabetes prevention, and Lyme disease treatment. As Deputy Chair of the Standing Committee on Health, I helped produce a report on prevention of childhood obesity and physical inactivity.

I've been elected four times to Saanich Council between1990 and 2002. I chaired many committees (Finance, Bicycle Advisory) and task forces (Lochside Drive, W. Saanich Road Streetscape, Monster House) In 2002 I was elected to the CRD Board, where he chaired the Environment, Solid Waste, and Liquid Waste committees.

Politically, I am fiscally cautious, socially progressive, and a community builder who understands that quality of life rests on stewardship of neighbourhoods and our environment. I'm by nature a problem solver with a proven record of helping people work together towards common goals. In the end there’s only one taxpayer, and  more of our tax money should be invested in services in the region where we live.
